5 Budget-Friendly Skin Care Essentials that Actually Work

Finding products that are both effective and affordable can be difficult.  I have experimented with many skincare products over the years, both high-end and drugstore, and found these 5 budget-friendly items that I've incorporated into my regular skincare routine.  Most of them can be found in the drugstore, at prices that won't empty your wallet!

Winter can wreak havoc on your skincare routine.  Particularly for us ladies with aging skin.  Although I have had combination skin my whole life, I am now noticing the need to use products geared toward dry skin to fight and prevent those pesky fine lines and wrinkles.  These products target those problem areas and leave the skin feeling moisturized and smooth.

1.  Cerave Moisturizing Lotion

After reading about the benefit of incorporating Hyaluronic Acid into an anti-aging skincare routine, I researched products and found this moisturizer by Cereve to be rated highly and reasonably priced.  Hyaluronic Acid has been shown to preserve the moisture in the skin and it reduces collagen loss.

I use this lotion both day and night on my face and neck area.  I have also been using it on my dry, cracked hands, and it works wonders for healing that skin as well.  It can be used all over the body, and because it comes in a large bottle, it can last for months!

2.  Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is said to brighten and even out the skin.  Look for a Vitamin C serum like this one, that comes in dark, not clear, packaging because Vitamin C is deactivated by UV light.  Be sure to wear sunscreen daily (which you should be doing as part of your anti-aging routine anyway!) because Vitamin C can make your skin more sensitive to the sun's harmful rays.

3.  Pixi Glow Tonic

Exfoliation is an important aspect of anti-aging skincare, year-round.  This Pixi Glow Tonic contains Glycolic Acid, an AHA, which gets rid of dead skin, helping your complexion appear more radiant.  Exfoliation also allows other skincare products to work more effectively.  I use this just once a week, as more often than that can be too harsh for dry, sensitive skin.

4.  Tinted Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a MUST for all women, no matter the age.  Sunscreen is the most important tool in our anti-aging toolbox.  It protects our skin from the damaging rays of the sun, which is the leading cause of wrinkles.  I love this tinted sunscreen because it provides light coverage and has a mattifying effect.  It can be worn alone or under makeup.

5.  Farm Fresh Guac Star Avocado Mask

I picked up this moisturizing mask at a spa after the esthetician recommended it for my dry winter skin.  I use it weekly, and it feels amazing and helps my skin look amazing as well.   This hydrating mask soothes and smooths my complexion, making it look refreshed and glowing.  Although it is not a drugstore product, it is still a reasonable price.

  2. Great list. I may need to try Cerave in addition to Amlactin. I have a severe case of KP on my arms and it helps soothe the inflammation. Thanks for sharing. Most of the products I use have been recommended of others. I’m not very keen on trying new products unless I know they come recommended.

    1. I have KP as well, and I use the Cerave on my arms and legs. It helps temporarily, which is impressive because many lotions don't work at all. I'll have to try Amlactin too.

  3. My dermatologist recommended CereVe lotion to me years ago and I've never used anything else since, but I had no idea it had anti-aging properties too! Makes me want to keep using it as I get older. :) I love tinted sunscreen for the summer - it's too hot to wear real makeup, so I love wearing something that protects my skin and gives me a little coverage too.

  5. Haha I feel like avocado is the latest "cool" food so I'm not surprised there's a skincare product made with it! (Though I've got to admit "Guac Star" is a pretty great name, ha!)

    1. So true about avocado. I don't personally like to eat avocado, but it feels great on my face!
